Hello, aspiring artists! Do you enjoy drawing? Maybe you like sketching funny animals, cool superheroes, or your favorite things from cartoons.  That’s awesome! Drawing is a super fun way to express yourself and create anything you imagine. But how can you make your drawings even more amazing? Well, guess what? You can become a superstar sketcher with just a little practice!

Here are some fun and simple techniques to help you improve your drawings:

sketching

The best part about drawing is that you don’t need a million fancy things to get started. All you need is a pencil, some paper, and a big imagination! Pencils are great because you can easily erase mistakes (we all make them sometimes, that’s okay!).  Any kind of paper will work at first, but later you can try out sketchbooks or special drawing paper that’s smoother.

2. Make Friends with Basic Shapes:

Did you know that basic shapes like squares, triangles, ovals, and circles are the building blocks of practically everything in the world?  Consider a beach ball that bounces—that’s a circle! How about a slice of pizza? That’s a triangle, right? Before you jump into drawing anything super complicated, try practicing drawing these shapes neatly. After you’ve mastered those, you can combine them to create a variety of entertaining things!

3. Lines, Lines, Everywhere:

lines

Lines are like the building blocks of your drawings. They can be thick and bold, or thin and light. Try drawing straight lines up and down, then side to side.  Next, challenge yourself with curves and zigzags. Can you draw a squiggly line that looks like a happy snake?

4. Let's Get Doodling:

The term “doodle art” is just a fancy way of stating “drawing freely”.  Pick-up  your pencil and don’t worry about making a perfect picture. Simply move your hand and observe the forms and lines that emerge. You might surprise yourself with what you create! Before beginning a larger drawing, doodle to get your hand warmed up and your imagination flowing.

5. The Observational Power:

Look around you! Examine your surroundings! There are so many beautiful things to sketch in the world. Examine your pet or your favorite toy closely. Which forms come to mind? How does the light fall on it? Try to see the details before you put pencil to paper. This will help you in creating more realistic-looking drawings.

6. Your friend is Reference:

Sometimes, it’s okay to have a little help. If you are having trouble drawing something complex, like a person or a flower, look up a picture of it online or in a book. This is called using a reference. Although you shouldn’t duplicate the reference exactly, it can help you see the shapes and details you might miss.

7. Talk about Shapes Again:

shapes

Recall the fundamental forms we discussed before. They’re incredibly helpful in this situation! Make an effort to simplify the objects you wish to sketch into basic shapes. Is an automobile mostly a rectangle with wheels? Is the skull of a cat a large round and the ears smaller ovals? It’s a lot easier to sketch those complex objects once you understand the fundamental outlines.

8. Draw, Lights, Camera:

Everything we see has light and shadow. There is shade and light in everything we perceive. Things appear bright when there is light and gloomy when there is shade. Your drawings can look more realistic and three-dimensional by including shadows. Start by imagining where the light is coming from, then shade the areas that wouldn’t be hit by the light as darkly.

9. Practice Leads to Improvement:

The key element? Continue to draw! Your skills will improve with continued practice. Don’t give up if your drawings don’t appear flawless straight away. Best artists never stop learning and practicing; everyone has to start somewhere. Draw every day, even if it’s just for a few minutes. Draw what you enjoy, but also try new things!

10. Most Importantly, Have Fun:

Drawing should be enjoyable! Not enjoying yourself will make it seem like labor. So put on some music you like, grab your favorite snacks, and let your creativity run wild!  In art, there are no mistakes—only fortunate accidents.

Keep in mind that the greatest method to get better at drawing is to practice, young painters. A little practice and lots of enjoyment will quickly turn you into an expert sketcher! So take out your pencils and start working.
