So, What is the History of the Soroban?
The Soroban, also known as the Japanese abacus, is a calculating device that originated from the traditional abacus and became the predecessor of today’s calculator.
Becoming popular in the 13th century, the Soroban was highly sought after & used globally – from Europe to the Middle East. It became a reliable tool for business at that time. Although abacuses have seen a decline in their use over the years, they are still commonplace in many parts of Asia. Older adults commonly use them at traditional stores, pawn shops, and goldsmiths.
In Japan, teachers still recognize the worth of the Soroban as more than a historical device but as a helpful tool to teach valuable skills that can be used in many areas. Doing soroban exercises teaches students logical reasoning and enhances their level of focus.

So How is the Soroban Used?
You must get creative and try different combinations to add up to 9 on the column rod. A beginner at Soroban will start by mastering the art of making 10 (5+5 or 1+9) and 5 (1+4 or 2+3). It’s all about practicing until you gain mastery over these combinations.
To find the sum of 2+4, a 5-bead must be placed on the column rod with two 1-beads. Then you need to subtract one 1-bead, resulting in a total of 6. The equation can be mathematically written as (1+1)+(5-1).
It’s usually relatively easy for students to learn the essential combination of numbers needed to do simple calculations. Yet, when it comes to more difficult equations like 6+7, which requires a combination of (5+1) + (10-5+2), this is where a lot of them struggle.
